One of the oldest and most revered watches from IWC, the Portugieser Chronograph seamlessly fuses historical significance, technical prowess, and timeless elegance. It was first introduced to the market in 1998 and has remained an unrivaled icon in haute horology. Actors John Krasinski and Sacha Baron Cohen have walked the red carpet with stainless steel Portugieser Chronographs.

Aside from imposing 40.9mm casings, John and Sacha’s choice models come with slim bezels, making them ideal for wearing under the cuff. They also feature organized blue and black dials with two vertical registers, simple Arabic numerals, and slim feuille hands, effectively straddling the line between a dress and a sports watch. The railway-track-style chapter ring and large pushers add interest to the retro-inspired but modern-leaning design. Photos from Numero Thailand and Sharp Magazine on Instagram

IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar IW503702

IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar as seen on Taika Waititi

Actor and filmmaker Taika Waititi recently graced the 2024 Emmys wearing a classic black tie look by Brunello Cucinelli. He punctuated his attire with a relatively new IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar timepiece, launched at the 2024 Watches and Wonders held in April.

The New Zealand native’s Portugieser is fashioned entirely in 18k Armor gold – a material that is harder and more wear-resistant than 5N gold. Sprucing up this unique metal finish is an Obsidian black dial topped with gold-plated hands and gold appliques. In addition to its Caliber 52616 which promises a 7-day power reserve, the watch also boasts a precise calendar function that is programmed without manual adjustment until the year 2100. IWC Portugieser Automatic IW358310

IWC Portugieser Automatic as seen on Kieran Culkin

Kieran Culkin took home his first-ever Emmys in 2023 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for his role in Succession, and he did so wearing a stealthy IWC Portugieser Automatic. This watch, released in 2020, was intended to be a more compact version of the Portugieser, with a simple time-only display and a more accessible automatic movement.

The American actor’s Portugieser, the ref IW358310, comes in a 40mm stainless steel case with a less bulky profile. Along with a stunning sunburst finish, its green dial features the collection’s signature design cues such as the applied Arabic numerals, leaf hands, and a railroad minute track. The guilloche small hacking seconds sub-dial adds an interesting texture to the timepiece, while the caliber 82200 under the sapphire caseback guarantees a comfortable 60-hour power reserve. IWC Portugieser Tourbillon Hand Wound Squelette

IWC Tourbillon as seen on Tom Brady

Now-retired American football quarterback Tom Brady was spotted at the premiere of his self-produced film 80 for Brady in February 2023 wearing a hell of a watch from IWC. The timepiece in question is the Portuguese Hand-Wound Tourbillon Squelette from 2015 – one of the brand’s most prestigious models.

Fusing functionality and technicality, the Portuguese Hand-Wound Tourbillon Squelette is noted for its 43mm 18-karat red gold case and contrasting black leather strap. The key feature of this watch is the fully skeletonized dial, topped with golden hands and a tourbillon on full display at 9 o’clock. IWC changed the structure and bridges of the Caliber 98920 beneath the face to make the watch more eye-catching and dramatic. Photos from IWC and GQ Magazine on Twitter
