Jaeger LeCoultre is the ultimate reference in fine watchmaking. Established in 1833, the Swiss brand has almost two centuries of watchmaking history, and a reputation for being an extraordinary innovator in the field of luxury timepieces.

Its founder, watchmaker Antoine LeCoultre, placed particular emphasis on the quality of the manufacture’s movements – a hallmark of the brand that stands strong to this day. Jaeger LeCoultre has produced several hundreds of movements since its inception, and has even commissioned calibers for the finest of watchmakers, including Cartier, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, IWC, and Bvlgari.

With exemplary movements as their foundation, Jaeger LeCoultre has also built itself a reputation for creating reliable and innovative luxury watches that merge elegant aesthetics with sporting functionality.

From quintessential dress watches like the Reverso and Rendez-vous, to robust tool watches like the AMVOX and Master Compressor, Jaeger LeCoultre’s diverse offerings satisfy the need for refined timepieces capable of withstanding life’s every situation. A BRIEF HISTORY OF JAEGER LECOULTRE

Jaeger LeCoultre traces its roots to 1833, when watchmaker Antoine LeCoultre founded a small watchmaking workshop in Le Sentier, Switzerland. After having invented a machine that could cut watch pinions or round gears from steel, he established his own factory.

Within 11 years, LeCoultre was able to invent the world’s most precise measuring tool of the time – the Millionomètre. Capable of measuring a micron, the machine helped in refining the manufacture of watch parts, and in establishing the metric system as the standard for watch measurement. Just three years later, LeCoultre invented the crown winding system, which eliminated the need for keys in winding or setting a watch.

In 1851, he was awarded a gold medal at the first Universal Exhibition in London, for his work on improving watch precision and mechanization. In 1866, his son Elie LeCoultre joined the business, and together they established LeCoultre & Cie. At the young age of 16, Elie would begin to develop a plethora of complications, and help turn the small workshop into one of Switzerland’s most celebrated watch manufacturers.

In 1903, a Paris-based watchmaker by the name of Edmond Jaeger sought Swiss manufacturers to produce the ultra-thin movement that he had invented. At the time, Antoine LeCoultre’s grandson Jacques-David was already in charge of production at LeCoultre & Cie – and he accepts Jaeger’s commission. The young LeCoultre eventually developed a collection of ultra-thin watches, including the thinnest one in the world in 1907.

The next two decades witnessed the emergence of the company’s first Jaeger-LeCoultre icons. They successively introduced the Duoplan watch (1925), the perpetual Atmos clock (1928), and the iconic Reverso watch (1931). The official merger of LeCoultre & Cie with Edmond Jaeger SA took place in 1937.

Despite the Reverso’s initial success, it hit a roadblock after the World War. As the Art Deco aesthetic faded in popularity, round watches became the prevailing style, and tool watches became the call of the era. The Reverso slowly fell out of production.

In 1950, Jaeger-LeCoultre created the Memovox, a series of watches with an alarm function. Seven years after came the Memovox Automatic, the first wristwatch with automatic winding. In 1959, the Memovox Deep Sea followed, the first diving watch with an alarm function.

The late 1970s marked the beginnings of the Quartz Crisis, which almost brought the Swiss watchmaking industry to its knees. This prompted the brand to revive the Reverso in 1983, with a line of models that housed mostly quartz movements. Two years later, they introduced the first ever water-resistant Reverso case, guaranteeing total security for the movement, even when pivoting the case.

In 1992, the company institutionalized the 1,000 Hour Control test in the manufacture. The program tests an entire cased-up watch beyond what is required by official chronometry tests, thus making it one of the watch industry’s most stringent testing protocols.

In 2000, Richemont, a Swiss luxury goods holding company, purchased Jaeger-LeCoultre, and the brand remains an integral part of Richemont’s watchmaking division.

The rich legacy of the Jaeger LeCoultre brand serves as an inspiration, as it continues to push the boundaries of watchmaking through sophisticated designs and groundbreaking movements.

ABOUT THE JAEGER LECOULTRE COLLECTION

Often considered as one of the most sophisticated and innovative of luxury watchmakers, Jaeger LeCoultre is one of the few brands that have mastered the art of balancing precision with aesthetic finesse. Beyond their impressive catalog of in-house movements, Jaeger LeCoultre offers a broad choice of contemporary timepieces, which can be categorized into the following families:

JAEGER LECOULTRE REVERSO

The Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso is a rectangular watch with a clever dual-faced design. Introduced in 1931, the Reverso was especially designed for British polo players, who needed their timepieces to be protected from the hard knocks and shocks experienced during a polo game. Defined by codes of Art Deco style, the Reverso is characterized by its rectangular case, iconic gadroons, and swivel system showing a second face or a steel back. The Reverso is considered Jaeger LeCoultre’s most iconic watch, and it celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2021.

Today’s collection includes different variations of the Reverso, including the Monoface (with a steel caseback), the Duetto (with two watch faces), and the Tribute (which features codes of the first Reversos from the 1930s). There are also small seconds, moonphase, calendar, and tourbillon models.

JAEGER LECOULTRE MASTER

The Jaeger LeCoultre Master collection is a series of minimalist round watches that focus on technical rigor and incorporate different complications.

The Master collection is available in three ranges: the Master Grande Tradition (with 3 or more complications), the Master Ultra Thin (with an incredibly slim profile), and the Master Control (classic round watches with emblematic complications).

JAEGER LECOULTRE POLARIS

The Jaeger LeCoultre Polaris is a line of decidedly sporty watches inspired by the brand’s Memovox Polaris from 1968. These watches straddle the line between a dress and tool watch, and boast a water resistance of 100-300m depending on the model. This collection is home to a selection of three-hand models, chronographs, and a diver’s watch with an alarm function.

JAEGER LECOULTRE DUOMÈTRE

The Jaeger LeCoultre Duomètre is a line of watches that feature the brand’s “Dual Wing” concept. With it, the mainspring barrel separates the power going to the complications of the watch, from the power that goes to indicating the time. This results in increased accuracy, and a rather interesting design on the dial, which is cut in two parts to show the decorated watch movement.

JAEGER LECOULTRE RENDEZVOUS

The Jaeger LeCoultre Rendezvous is a collection of elegant watches made exclusively for women. These models are often completely set with diamonds, and come with dials that are either finely engraved or covered with mother-of-pearl. There is also an opening at 6 o’clock which shows the complexity of its automatic movement.

JAEGER LECOULTRE SERIAL NUMBERS

Jaeger LeCoultre keeps information on their reference numbers and serial numbers closely guarded, and no public production date exists for these. The best way to date your timepiece is to order an official extract directly from Jaeger LeCoultre’s website.

The serial number of Jaeger LeCoultre watches can be found on the International Limited Warranty card, or stamped on the case back, under the dial, and on the movement of each watch.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT JAEGER LECOULTRE

With thousands of calibers developed and a range of iconic models, Jaeger LeCoultre is one of the most important and innovative players in the watchmaking industry. Here are the most common questions asked about Jaeger LeCoultre watches.

HOW CAN I TELL IF A JAEGER LECOULTRE WATCH IS AUTHENTIC?

Jaeger LeCoultre watches are made with utmost precision, from the caliber to the case. An unmistakable hallmark of JLC watches is aesthetic harmony, which can be seen even in the inner workings of the watch.

That said, if you spot any mistake or any sign of unfinished work on a Jaeger LeCoultre timepiece, then it is most likely a counterfeit.

The best way to verify the authenticity of a Jaeger LeCoultre watch is to go to an authorized dealer to have your timepiece checked. One should also do due diligence by researching on their chosen model, so they can check if the details on the watch are in tune with the model’s supposed features.

Lastly, we always advise clients to buy only from a reputable watch retailer, who can provide a guarantee of authenticity on the watch.

WHY ARE JAEGER LECOULTRE WATCHES SO EXPENSIVE?

Jaeger LeCoultre is one of the most revered names in watchmaking. Not only did they revolutionize the watchmaking industry over time with their innovations, they have also established an expertise in both cutting-edge movements and elaborate designs.

Each Jaeger LeCoultre watch is produced with utmost attention to quality. Since 1992, they have conducted their famous “1,000 Hour Test” on each of their watches, which certifies that the timepiece has successfully passed JLC’s rigorous tests on regularity, resistance to temperature changes and atmospheric pressure, robustness, and resistance to shocks and magnetic fields.

All of these attributes make Jaeger LeCoultre watches highly exclusive, and thus more expensive.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO SERVICE MY JAEGER LECOULTRE WATCH?

Fine timepieces need to be maintained periodically to keep their performance and value. The following maintenance periods are generally recommended for luxury watches:

  • Every 3 to 4 years for a complication watch.
  • Every 4 to 5 years for a watch with a mechanical movement (automatic or manual).
  • Every 6 to 7 years for a quartz watch.

However, the overall condition of your timepiece will depend on how it’s worn and stored. There are certain signs that your watch is due for maintenance. Here are some Signs It’s Time for Watch Maintenance.

BUYING A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED JAEGER LECOULTRE VS NEW JAEGER LECOULTRE

With almost two centuries of watchmaking history, Jaeger LeCoultre has mastered the balance between mechanical performance and aesthetic harmony. The brand exudes impeccable style, supreme intelligence, and exemplary taste.

Thus, acquiring a Jaeger LeCoultre watch guarantees entry into a distinguished club – and one of the smartest ways to be part of it is to buy from the pre-owned market.

JLC is renowned for classic designs that remain in fashion even years and decades after. Therefore, starting your search in the secondary market offers the best opportunity to own these masterpieces.

In the pre-owned market, you have a wider range of styles to choose from – both vintage and new, discontinued styles, and limited editions – most of which are not carried by authorized retailers. There is a whole world to discover in the pre-owned watch market, and a plus is that you get to learn about the intricate history of watchmaking on your way.

Another advantage of buying pre-owned is getting better value out of your money. Just like cars, new luxury watches have an immediate depreciation in value once they’re taken out of the store. By buying pre-owned, you avoid taking this dip in value. Moreover, while rare vintage models appreciate over the years, pre-owned watches in general are less expensive than a brand-new piece.

Finally, buying pre-owned does not always mean buying an old model. If you want a watch from the current collection, or prefer your watch to be as new as possible, these can also be found in the pre-owned market. In fact, there are many watches available in mint and excellent condition, or even unworn and in their original packaging.

At SwissWatchExpo, we commit to delivering every watch, vintage or current, in “like new” condition. Our expert watchmakers and refinishing team work tirelessly on each watch to get it as close to new condition as possible, before they are listed for sale.

Our guiding principle is that buying pre-owned gives our customers the maximum value possible. If you’re in the market for a Jaeger LeCoultre watch, our experts are ready to help find the right one for you.
