The Rolex Oysterquartz, introduced in 1977, marked a significant evolution in the world of luxury watches by incorporating then groundbreaking quartz technology with Rolex's legendary artistry. This innovative stride empowered Rolex to present a watch that harmonized the precision of quartz with the opulence and dependability synonymous with the brand.
The Rolex Oysterquartz series, including the Oysterquartz Datejust and Oysterquartz Day-Date, has garnered adoration from collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The Oysterquartz Datejust, featuring a date function and impeccable aesthetics, exudes a resilient yet refined appeal ideal for everyday wear. In contrast, the Oysterquartz Day-Date, exclusively fashioned from precious metals, showcases dual displays for day and date, catering to aficionados who covet both functionality and luxury in their timepiece. Each Oysterquartz Rolex boasts a distinctive angular case design and the iconic Rolex Oyster bracelet, epitomizing the seamless fusion of contemporary flair and timeless heritage.
Rolex's foray into quartz movements was a strategic move to combine quartz accuracy with the brand's hallmark luxury and reliability. The Rolex Oysterquartz is a collection of quartz watches produced by Rolex from 1977 to the early 2000s.
During the 1970s Quartz Crisis, Japanese suppliers put forward large quantities of quartz watches, which were less expensive yet more accurate. Rolex joined a consortium of watchmakers who sought to create their own quartz movement, but they eventually left and made their own movement.
The result was the Rolex Oysterquartz, a watch that differed greatly from the Rolex line, not just because of its movement, but also because of its angular case, integrated bracelet, and sapphire crystal.
Rolex Oysterquartz watches are water resistant to 100 meters, thanks to their three-body construction: a robust tonneau-shaped case, an inclined bezel, a screw down case back, and an Oyster crown that secures them together.
With this level of water resistance, and considering the vintage nature of the Oysterquartz, the wearer can use it for light water exposure, such as handwashing.
Rolex generally recommends a service every 3-5 years. By nature, however, vintage timepieces tend to be fragile, so it's recommended to have any vintage watch serviced every two years.
However, a watch's water resistance and accuracy are not permanent and are subject to wear and tear. There may be signs that your watch needs a service sooner rather than later. Read on for Signs It’s Time for Watch Maintenance.
