Inspired by the Renault military tanks used during World War I, the Cartier Tank rose from the carnage and mayhem of conflict, and became one of the world’s most timeless and beloved watches. Since its introduction in 1917, the Cartier Tank has spawned many variations – one of which is the Cartier Tankissime.
In the 1990s, Cartier sought to introduce their most famous timepiece to the modern watch buyer through a distinct design detail – an integrated chain-link bracelet. It first appeared in the Tank Francaise watch in 1995, and in 2005 a more feminine version followed in the form of the Tankissime.
To design these watches, Cartier yet again drew inspiration from military tanks. Instead of the leather strap so often associated with Cartier, the chain-link bracelet that matched the case recall the caterpillar tracks of armored vehicles. This resulted in a sportier, more contemporary look that was very well received, especially among younger audiences.
The Cartier Tankissime softens the angular design of the Tank Francaise with more rounded sides and wider bracelet links. It was made available in small to medium sizes measuring 17mm and 22mm, and in 18 karat yellow, white, and rose gold. The curved case back fits snug on the wrist.
The dial is classic Cartier with a silvered dial, painted Roman numerals with a secret Cartier signature at 10 o’clock, blued steel epee hands, and sapphire cabochon. Some models are embellished with factory brilliant cut diamonds on both sides of the case, and these come with a matching diamond-set crown. The Cartier Caliber 057 quartz movement beats inside each Tankissime model.
All these make for a classically elegant jewelry watch that is immensely wearable. Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Monica Bellucci have been spotted with the Cartier Tankissime on their wrists.
The Cartier Tankissime is a contemporary and feminine take on the classic Tank watch. Here are the most frequently asked questions about the Cartier Tankissime.
The Cartier Tankissime is a version of the Tank watch introduced in the 2000s. Its design is very similar to the Cartier Tank Francaise with its caterpillar-track inspired chain-link bracelet.
It is available in small and medium sizes, and in 18k yellow, rose, and white gold. There is also an option for diamonds on both sides of the case. It was only produced for several years and is considered a rare find.
Cartier Tankissime watches are water resistant to 30 meters or 100 feet, which makes them “splash proof”. Watches with this level of water resistance must not be submerged in water, particularly during swimming and water sports.
It is also important to know that a watch’s water resistance is not permanent. Over time, it can be reduced by the aging of gaskets, deformation of gears, and overall wear. It is recommended that a watch’s water resistance be checked every 2-3 years.
The Cartier Tankissime was only produced from 2005 to the early 2010s. They can still be sourced in the pre-owned watch market. Explore our collection of Cartier Tankissime watches here.
